An ancient martial art is combined with modern exercise science to create a new fitness craze.
Kung-fu Fitness burns 800 calories per hour and teaches self-defense.
Wednesday, October 16, 2008, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – Kung-fu is one of the oldest martial arts. In ancient times, kung-fu (defined as ‘discipline through hard work’) was first used as a form of exercise. When traveling bands of thieves would attempt to rob the monasteries, the monks learned their exercises were effective as self-defense. Over time, the monks would watch and learn from animal and insect fights. As a result, Tiger, Eagle Claw, Snake, Praying Mantis and even Monkey kung-fu were developed. Kung-fu Fitness is a hybrid of ancient kung-fu, group exercise and fun self-defense training.
Kung-fu Fitness was developed by John Spencer Ellis, a 2nd degree black belt in kung-fu, fitness professional and boot camp instructor from Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Orange County. “Kung-fu Fitness is different than other kickboxing-type of workouts for several reasons. It has smooth circular movements, rather than hard linear moves. It is easier on your joints.” states Ellis. “In addition, you are taught self-defense applications, instead of fancy dance moves,” he adds.
Kung-fu Fitness can be purchased as a consumer workout DVD, or a complete turn-key business system for martial artists or personal trainers to use to grow their business. The business system includes a complete training course, instructional videos, manual, test, marketing materials and national certification. Information on the exercise DVD and complete business system is available at http://www.kungfufitness.com.

The Dream Diet
Scientific Evidence that Dreaming Can Make You Thinner
Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, October 2, 2008 – Twenty years ago, people would have called Dr. John Spencer Ellis a charlatan. Today, science backs up his Dream Diet with page after page of proof that better sleep, and hence better dreaming, leads to a thinner body.
The average human needs 8.3 hours of sleep per night, but only gets 6.9 hours. Aside from the short term affect of fatigue from less than adequate sleep; sleep-deprived people suffer long term affects of insulin resistance, obesity, stimulant abuse and an increase in cancer and diabetes.
We have always been told that to lose weight wisely, we must eat in moderation and exercise on a regular basis. This, by and large, is still so. Obviously, there are individual interpretations of ‘moderation’ and ‘regular’. In addition to these words of wisdom, consumers are told to “get quality sleep”. What does this mean and how do you get it? Quality sleep is long enough in duration and allows for gentle and appropriate transitions in the levels of sleep. The dream Diet is all about your hormones.
Growth Hormone (GH) is released by the pituitary gland and is primarily released during your deepest levels of sleep. GH is responsible for lean muscle and body fat regulation.
Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland is allows you to get the deepest sleep. It also helps those with metastatic cancer and it improved Immunity. If taken as a supplement, a dosage of .3 mg if used regularly and 2.5 – 3 mg for short durations is suggested.
And, as an FYI, beta blockers (blood pressure meds) & NSAIDs suppress natural melatonin production. The hormone ghrelin stimulates your appetite. If you lack quality sleep, ghrelin secretion is increased (prompting you to eat more). Leptin is a protein of 167 amino acids and manufactured in fat cells. It creates satiety (a full feeling). When you lack sleep, you secrete less leptin, so you want to keep eating. And cortisol is secreted by the adrenal glands. It is a stress hormone that allows for additional fat deposits primarily around the mid-section. Lack of sleep causes a “general” stress in the body.
Quality sleep can be accomplished in a few easy steps. First, create a ritual which allows you to easily transition into a relaxed state (mediation, bath, reading). Make your bedroom as dark as possible. This allows for the cascade of proper hormonal changes. Avoid alcohol 3 hours before bed. It may help you go to sleep, but it will interfere with deep and continuous sleep. Avoid caffeine after noon for obvious reasons. Do not exercise within 3 hours of going to bed (sex in okay). Avoid napping when possible. If you do nap, make it short in duration and early enough in the day. In addition, remove most electronics (if not all) from your bedroom. They are distractions, put off light, and science shows that their low-level electronic field decreases melatonin production.
So, exercise and proper nutrition are an essential to good health and proper body weight. Deep quality sleep may be the missing link in attaining your perfect body weight. Dr. Ellis has additional information on his Dream Diet techniques at http://www.spencerbroadcasting.com where you can watch his free online video presentation.

Life Coaching Becomes Popular on Main Street
Stigma attached to therapy doesn’t show its face
Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, October 2, 2008 – Therapy or counseling often conjure up an image of someone in crisis or out of control. In contrast, life coaching is viewed as positive, forward-thinking and insightful.
For decades, people seeking counseling for various life challenges have primarily done so in secrecy. Today, more people are seeking life coaching as an alternative to traditional therapy. A distinction must be made. Often times, people do need medical intervention, traditional therapy and possibly medication in particular situations.
Life coaching is different from therapy in numerous ways. First of all, its intent is more forward thinking and life planning. Life coaches work in conjunction with their clients to co-actively develop strategies for financial success, time management, holistic health, communications, healthy living, relationships, spiritual quests, even college entrance exams and all points in between.
Dr. John Spencer Ellis, CEO of the Spencer Institute for Life Coaching states, “There is no particular background that makes the perfect life coach. Coaches frequently come from a background in fitness, wellness, communications, leadership, law, medicine, nursing, religion, and Eastern studies. Frequently, psychologists and counselors, who have had their fill of insurance forms, negativity, and antiquated philosophies, seek the Spencer Institute for Life Coach Training to transition their careers.”
Life coach training (depending on the focus of the program) includes education in neurolinguistic programming, motivational strategies, sports psychology, hypnosis, communications, conflict resolution, wellness concepts, stress management, personality typing, and several other synergistic tools of success.
The Spencer Institute can be contacted at http://www.spencerinstitute.com.

I wanted to share a very short story with you. In the last year, I have had many major life changes. After getting up at 4:30 AM since 1992, I no longer teach fitness classes. I’m in a new relationship which is the type of relationship I’ve always wanted. Awesome! I also turned over the helm of NESTA to Scott Gaines (Senior V.P.) so I can focus on new projects. In addition, I’m now a filmmaker with the release of The Compass on February 8, 2009.
You may be wondering, “why does any of this matter?” Well, it has given me the time and opportunity to pause, reflect, be grateful, visit family, see my two nieces, and determine what is truly important to me. I’m encouraging you to take these actions of personal insight and reflection now. Don’t wait a day. This has been one of the most interesting and re-energizing times of my life. You deserve the same.
The Compass! I want to thank all of you for your support and interest in this world-changing project. When completed, it will be a movie, soundtrack, book, audio book and online community. Following the premiere in Orange County, there will be a premiere in London. So, stay posted for details.
That’s it for now.
Be well!
John
PS – I almost forgot. Next week, Kelli Calabrese and I will be releasing “Celebrity Personal Trainer in 30 Days”. This home study program will give you a detailed step-by-step blueprint of how to become a local or worldwide fitness celebrity in just one month! Details are coming very soon.

Business Tip: Become a Necessity, Not a Luxury
From John Spencer Ellis, CEO
Everyone is talking about the economy. Is everyone really “hurting”? Sure, gas prices are up and anyone who has a significant amount of money invested in real estate or who has a job in the real estate sector is affected to some degree. However, do you really think that the people who want training are really suddenly unable to afford your services? Those who have money and will be buying your services are still doing fine. Oh, some people will make the excuse that the economy, gas prices, or real estate market has hurt them, but what they are really saying is, “There are more important things for me to do with my money than spending it on you.” Don’t argue with them, they must do what they feel they must do. Your primary job is to give your clients so much value that you are the LAST thing they would ever dream of dropping.
New people should be scrambling to obtain the finances to be able to afford you. Do people stop buying cars because they can’t “afford” them? Do you think everyone ONLY buys a car they can “afford”? Most people cannot afford to own a car, which is why they have a loan and regular loan payments. But they still buy the car. Despite the possibility of carpooling or public transportation, people simply value their cars too much to let them go. You must ensure your value is appreciated in the same way. You must become a necessity, not a luxury. Life and health are more important than transportation (keep that mindset, don’t say that to your clients or they’ll laugh at you). No more excuses as to why you aren’t successful. Learn what you must about training so that you can provide a clear, well-defined, and outstanding program with tremendous energy in instruction, and keep learning from those who are successful is sales and promotion of their services. Most people are not suddenly unable to afford your services; it is another test for you to show them how much you are truly worth. People will always fight to keep what they value highly. Keep your head up and raise your game…NO EXCUSES! Become a necessity.
For more information on how to communicate with your clients, gain new clients, and retain all of your clients for the long term, refer to your NESTA PFT manual. Don’t have an updated manual? It’s time to upgrade at www.nestapft.com or by calling 1-877-348-6692. Learn from your clients as they learn from you.
Training Tip: Assess Active Range of Motion before Loading
From Mark Baines, Senior Vice President of Program Development
If you have ever found yourself struggling to determine why your client has such a hard time with a given exercise, it could simply be that they do not understand the movement. But remember, most clients cannot learn the movement by starting with external loading. They must first complete the movement without any load at all. We simply call this – Active Range of Motion (AROM).
It is imperative that you have your client mirror your movement and duplicate what you do so that they understand the movement you are asking them to perform. This may mean standing right in front of them and having them perform simulated pulldown movements (shoulder adduction with elbow flexion) until you are satisfied they can complete the basic movement. Have them continue to mirror you and perform the “air movement” until it is satisfactory. Then, once they attempt an externally loaded pulldown movement, they are not likely to make as many or any mistakes.
It is your job to show your client, and teach your client the movement, then observe their active range of motion so that they not only understand the movement and what is expected, but so that you know how far and how well they can move. Once the client is “loaded” you must not exceed this active range of motion. Your client will move better, progress faster, understand your expectations more clearly, and you will have a happier, healthier client that will make your overall training job much easier.
It is so simple. But so many trainers avoid it, ignore it, or forget it. Perform this simple action every time you are attempting either a complex movement or a new movement with your client. It only takes a moment, and it will separate you as a professional trainer over those who simply put their clients on a machine or exercise and try to describe what to do with little success.
For more information about assessing active range of motion and determining the most appropriate exercise to fit your clients’ goals, consult your NESTA PFT manual. Don’t have an updated manual? Call 1-877-348-6692 or got to www.NESTApft.com and order yours today. Take care of your clients.

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. June 24, 2008— Starting July 1, 2008, Spencer Institute is introducing a program to make employers/supervisors help their employees to become more productive, less stressed, and healthier in the work place. Becoming a Certified Corporate Wellness Coach (CCWC), employers can teach others how to promote health and happiness in the place of work.
By becoming a Certified Corporate Wellness Coach, employers will be capable to raise morale and have greater productivity; areas in which many offices suffer.
This program will help a trained human resources or fitness professional how to approach their staff in a healthy manner and create an all around healthy environment and wellness program for all. This program has been proven to reduce absenteeism, increase employee health and energy, increase productivity, improve self-confidence, and much more. Employers can expect to gain more creativity and a better ability to concentrate, decrease stress, and reduce employee turnover.
The Corporate Wellness Coach Certification program has a six month time limit but most students finish in about two months. Students will study from a textbook and listen to a course outline and lessons on a CD-Rom. There is a comprehensive multiple choice home exam that all students are required to take. About the Spencer Institute: Spencer Institute provides the missing link between coaching- that gives you practical advice about what to do – and psychotherapy, that focuses on talking about the past. Hemispheric Integration ä and neuro-lingusitic skills provide the structure of how to move through challenges and beyond theoretical concepts, by creating a positive road map to success.

Get Lean While You’re Asleep
Hi everyone. I want to tell you about the importance of sleep as it pertains to fitness, weight loss and overall wellness.
Without quality sleep in the correct duration, you cannot completely recover from your exercise session and prepare for the next one. Without proper sleep, you also cannot attain optimal body fat levels. And lack of sleep also inhibits lean muscle. You want this to increase your metabolism.
So, how does all of this
work? First, we need to create the
proper environment for quality sleep. As you prepare for sleep, decrease the number of bright lights in your
home. Create a ritual such as a
bath, soft music, reading, meditation or gentle yoga. Allow your mind to clear and escape from the day’s events. Once you get into your bedroom, make the
room as dark as possible. If
needed, use light blocking curtains. The pineal gland, located at the base of
your brain, detects darkness via the lenses of your eyes. When total darkness occurs, it allows
for the cascade of hormonal and enzymes to carry out functions such as tissue
repair and body fat optimization.
Remove excess electronics from your bedroom and move your cell phone and alarm clock away from your head. Recent studies show that low level electrical fields from these devices can inhibit melatonin production. This in return, inhibits deep sleep and quality dreaming. The temperature in your room should be about 67 – 68 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows for the appropriate core temperature decline associated with sleep and your body’s 24 hour clock.
Throughout the day, about every 45 minutes, your body releases growth hormone (GH) from the pituitary gland in the center of your brain. However, during deep sleep (REM), your body releases far more GH. When you do not prepare properly and attain adequate REM sleep, you don’t get proper GH levels. HG is responsible for regulating body fat levels and maintaining lean muscle.
Lack of quality sleep creates stress in the body. One of your body’s reactions to stress is to produce a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal cortex (in the adrenal gland). This hormonal release shows up in the form up fat tissue around your mid-section. Going back many generations, our body developed this response to give us needed energy in the form of fat to help us through a stressful situation.
And now a quick note on napping and it’s affects on fitness and overall wellness.
Napping is a joy! However, it must be done with some thought behind it. Naps should be short in duration – about 20 – 30 minutes. It’s important to keep them short because napping too long disrupts your normal 24-hour body cycles (circadian rhythms). Your naps should be earlier in the day (between 12 – 1pm if possible) and ritualistic in nature. If you are napping following an intense training session, there is also a ritual to follow. First, shower to regulate body temperature. Then eat a small meal (proteins and carbs) to regulate blood sugar levels. If needed, use an alarm clock so you don’t sleep too long and disrupt the upcoming night’s sleep.
Well, there you have it. The techniques needed to ensure you stay fit, sleep well and get the lean, healthy body you deserve.
I will be speaking on this very topic at THE BIG SLEEP SHOW in Chicago on May 10, 2008. We will have the video of the presentation available online for all of you who cannot attend. Details are found at www.thebigsleepshow.com . EndFragment

New Developments under the JSE Roof!
2008 has already been quite a success for John Spencer Ellis Enterprises and its subsidiaries.
NESTA finalized their PFT 2.0 with Polar. This certification program is the first of its kind in the health and fitness industry. By integrating Polar technology into the program, personal trainers will be able to track the progress of their clients during each workout and over a period of time. The PFT 2.0 was showcased at the IHRSA trade show in March in San Diego. It was met with much praise from health and fitness professional as well as club owners and managers. The PFT 2.0 received its accreditation from the NCCA in March, acknowledging that this program has met the high standards put forth in the industry. Visit http://www.nestacertified.com for a complete listing of our programs.
Adventure Boot Camp continues to grow with having had two live workshops at JSE headquarters this year so far. The workshops were filmed to make DVD copies to include in training packets, making it easier for trainers who want to open their own camp, but find it an inconvenience to travel to be at our corporate offices for a 3-day training workshop. Our local camps continue to sell out with every session. We have a high number of repeat campers who keep coming back for more. In March, we paired up with Adidas for a special Boot Camp session at the Irvine Spectrum. About 70 brave ladies sacrificed a Saturday sleep-in to come work out with John Spencer Ellis. They all had a great time and got a special sneak peak at the new line of Adidas apparel- the store was opened early specially for them. Visit http://www.ocbootcamp.com for more information and http://www.bootcampfinder.com to find a Boot Camp near you.
John has been working on several other ventures all in the realm of health and wellness. One was the acquisition of Labs of America- now Spencer Labs USA (http://www.spencerlabsusa.com) - which allows people to get a complete blood work done at a lab near them and be able to get a detailed review of their results online. The site includes a complete glossary of terms to make reading the results easy for any consumer. Check it out for yourself at http://www.spencerlabsusa.com
Spencer Nutrition is another new branch of JSE. This is a highly customizable diet plan which is based on specific needs of the individual. After years of research, John Spencer Ellis was able to realize that the biggest flaw in most diet plans was their “cookie-cutter” approach to dieting. Everyone is different in body composition and activity levels and therefore require different nutrients. This plan is guaranteed to work because it is customized and offers a plethora of meal options. See if this program is right for you http://www.spencernutrition.com
There are two trips on the horizon for John Spencer Ellis as well. In April, he embarks on a 5-day Adventure Boot Camp cruise to Mexico. Participants will take part in 5 days of exercise, workshops, and lectures all while enjoying the luxury and pampering of a QueensLander ä Cruise. The second trip is to the Windy City, Chicago from May 9 to May 10 for The Big Sleep convention. John will be giving a keynote speech on the implications of lack of sleep and how very important it is to our health and well being to get adequate rest. John is a spokesperson for The Sleep Number Bed, which will be exhibiting at the 2-day convention. http://www.thebigsleepshow.com
John Spencer Ellis Enterprises is growing and we couldn’t be happier. Since the beginning of 2008, several new people have been hired to join our dynamic team. Tricia Hansen is our customer service representative. Scott Bolinger does graphic design and is in charge of updating the majority of our websites. Allison Massetti is head of sales. We also have a fresh flow of interns who are eager to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience by working with the team.
